Paul Cezanne (1839. 1. 19—1906. 10. 22) was born in Aix-en-Provence, the south of France, was a French Roman Catholic. His father was the co-founder security that was unavailable to most of his contemporaries and eventually resulting in a large inheritance. On the other hand, he got his conception and vision of life from his mother, for she was vivacious and romantic, but quick to take offence. Fromr 1858 to 1861, for having complied with his father’s wishes, he attended the law school but also received drawing lessons. Unfortunately, his banker father againsted him to his pursuance of artistic development, but he committed himself to pursue it and left Aix-en-Provence for Paris in 1861. Eventually, his father reconciled with him and supported his choice of career.
Upon Paul Cezanne’s famouse paintings, his early work was often concerned with the figures were imaginatively landscape paintings. Later, he became more interested in working from direct observation and then deelopes a light, airy painting style gradually. He said, ”I want to make of impressionism something solid and lasting like the art in the museums”. His contention that he was recreating Nicolas Poussin’s “after nature”underscored his desire to unite observation of nature with the permanence of classical composition. In the mid-1860s Pissarro and Cazanne were that of masters and disciples, and over the following decade Pissarro and Paul Cezanne’s landscape paintings excursioned together. Throughout his life, he struggled to develop an authentic observation of the seen world by the most accurate method of representing it in paint that he could find. He structurally ordered whatever he perceived into simple forms and colour planes. A few of subjects were concentrated by him and he was equally proficient in each of Paul Cezanne’s famouse paintings:Paul Cezanne’s landscape paintings, still life, portraits, and studies of bathers’ paintings…He also remained a devout French Roman Catholic, although religious images appeared less frequently then landscape paintings in his later work. He said, ”When I judge art, I take my painting and put it next to a God-made object like a tree or flowers. If it clashes, it is not art. ”
Cezanne was caught in a storm while he was working in the field one day, and only after working for two hours under a downpour did he decide to go home. He collapsed on his way home, he was taken home by a passing driver, his old housekeeper rubbed his arms and legs to restore the circulation and regained consciousness as a result. He intended to continue working, but later on, he fainted. He never left his bed after that and he was finally died of pneumonid a few days later. Throughout his life, it could be diveded into seeral part:From 1861 to 1870, it was his dark period in Paris; From 1870 to 1878, it was his impressionist period in Aix-en-Provence and Paris; Then it was his mature period in Aix –en-Provence from 1878 to 1890;And his final period was in Provence during his rest life.
